Death Notes: Death Notice - Times, Hartford, published 2 Jun 1838: In this city on the 26th inst., John Caldwell, Esq. in the 83rd year of his age.
Loans and gifts together with declining mercantile activities brought about by the Embargo of 1807 affected Caldwell's solvency and position in the community. Once the most respected man in Hartford, when he died little was left of his fortune. The family home was about all that he managed to salvage.
General Notes: He was the first commander (1788-1792) of the Governor's Independent Volunteer Troop of Horse Guards (the Horse Guard). He was a prominent Hartford merchant engaged in the West Indies trade and lost ships and property through the French spoliations (committed by French privateers upon American commerce. By convention with France in 1800, the United States assumed the liabilities). He was the first president of the Hartford Bank and one of the commissioners that built the state house in 1794-1796.
Insurance in Connecticut by P. Henry Woodward, Boston, 1897, pp 2-7: CALDWELL, JOHN: President of the Hartford Marine Insurance Company; born December 31, 1755, died May 20, 1838. Major John Caldwell was a merchant extensively engaged in foreign and domestic trade, and held a leading place in nearly all the local enterprises of his time. He built and owned ships, providing no small share of the cargoes to and from the West Indies, and the ports of other foreign lands. He was president of the Hartford Marine Insurance Company throughout its entire existence; first major of the Governor's Horse Guards, incorporated in 1788; and was elected twenty times to the legislature, which then met semi-annually. John Turnbull, the poet, John Caldwell and John Morgan constituted the commission for building the State House of Connecticut, begun in 1794.
Major Caldwell was also a member of the commission that supervised the building of the bridge across the Connecticut in 1809. He was one of the founders of the Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, the pioneer school in the United States for the education of this class of unfortunate children. He retired from business in 1818.

2nd Generation (Grandparents): Ozias Goodwin (1689 - 1776) & Martha Williamson (1700 - 1777).
3rd Generation (Great Grandparents): Nathaniel Goodwin (1637 - 1714) & Elizabeth Pratt.
4th Generation (2X Grandparents): Ozias Goodwin (1596 - 1683) & Mary Woodward. Ozias Goodwin was born in County Essex, England, in 1596. He married Mary Woodward, the daughter of Robert Woodward, of Braintree, County Essex, about 1628. Their son William was born in 1629 and came with his parents to Boston in 1632. Ozias' brother William Goodwin and his family came with Ozias on the 1632 voyage of the Lion and his story follows this family.
The Goodwins all went to Newtown in 1632 and then went to Hartford in 1636, where both brothers were original proprietors. When Reverend Thomas Hooker died and there was a split in the First Church in Hartford, many parishioners moved up the Connecticut River Valley, some to establish Hadley, Massachusetts. Ozias signed an agreement with the others on Apr 18, 1659, to move with them. However, when his brother William, Elder John White and others went, he stayed in Hartford, where he spent the rest of his life.
Ozias and Mary had their second child, Nathaniel, in Hartford in 1637 and then a daughter names Hannah was born there in 1639. Ozias was made a Freeman in 1669 and he died in the spring of 1683. The inventory of his estate was taken 3 April 1683. Unlike his brother William, he had kept a low profile in the community and did not seem to be involved in town, church or military affairs. The name of Goodwin was prominent in Hartford and the surrounding area, originating with Ozias.

Death Notes: Obituary - Rockford Republic, Rockford, Illinois, 11 Feb 1896: F. GRAHAM, SR., DEAD // Passed Away at His Home This Morning. // Was Stricken With Paralysis a Week Ago and Could Not Rally - Was a Resident of This City for a Great Many Years - The Sketch of his Life. // The life of Freeman Graham, Sr., passed out at fifteen minutes past 7 o'clock this morning and with his passing there disappears from Rockford one of its old and honored inhabitants and patriarch of the Graham family in this section.
Mr. Graham was stricken with paralysis a week ago while walking in front of Porter's Drug Store and since that time his death has been but a question of days and hours. The best of medical care could do nothing for him, and he sank steadily until his death this morning. On Sunday morning he relapsed into an unconscious condition and remained so until he died.
His death takes from the city a man who has been identified with business here for many years, and though far advanced in life he was still warm in the hearts of those who had known him in his strong prime and his demise will cause in their hearts a deep sense of loss.
Sketch of His Life. // Hon. Freeman Graham was born in Simsbury, Hartford county, Conn., Oct. 11, 1806. His boyhood days were passed in this native place, where he received a common school education, and served an apprenticeship of seven years in making cotton and woolen machines, becoming a practical machinist. In 1854 he came west, entered the employ of Charles Walker, of Chicago, and took charge of his iron works in Beloit, Wis., where he remained for two years.
Comes to Rockford. // Receiving an offer of a larger salary, Mr. Graham came to Rockford and entered the employee of Mr. Emerson. He became sole manager of the well known firm of Emerson, Talcott & Co., manufacturers of farm implements and in that responsible position was widely known as an enterprising and progressive business man.
