THOMSON // Died at the Ohio Baptist Home, 3334 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland, Oct 29, 1918, at the age of eighty-four years. He was born in Geauga County in 1834, and, always anxious to obtain an education, became a student in Hiram College, having for a classmate the late President James A. Garfield. He subsequently became a teacher in Ohio and Michigan; but, feeling the call of God to the ministry of the Gospel, he accepted the pastorate of the Chester Baptist Church, was ordained in 1862, and became pastor of that church, of which he held a second pastorate. Other pastorates, in Twinsburg and LaGrange, followed. His wife's health failing, he removed to Tennessee, where he served several churches. With his second wife he returned to Ohio, and entered the Home in which he spent the several remaining years, and was tenderly cared for. He was a fervent Prohibitionist, believed in world-evangelization, and lived in accordance with his strong convictions. Two children, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, with a host of friends, mourn their bereavement.
While Mr. Thompson was pastor in LaGrange, he had the pleasure of leading to Christ and baptizing three children of Deacon Chamberlain, one of them, John A. (a lawyer, in Cleveland, now charged with the promotion of the Enlistment Week campaign); another, President C. W. Chamberlain, of Denison University (who writes an appreciative letter, telling of his memories of that day), and the other, a daughter, a teacher.

Burial Notes: Samuel Colt's wife had his body exhumed and moved to Cedar Hill Cemetery.

General Notes: Christopher Colt was born in Hartford on August 30, 1780, to Benjamin Colt, brother of Peter Colt. The vicissitudes of Christopher Colt's life could not have been predicted from his early years. He was one of eight children; his male siblings included Benjamin Colt, a Vermont farmer, Elisha Colt, a Massachusetts farmer, and his unfortunate older brother Daniel. The latter traveled south to New Orleans where he opened a store that proved unsuccessful; rather than try again, he succumbed to gambling and alcoholism, a choice that would later be repeated by some of his relatives.

Christopher followed Daniel into business, but he remained in Connecticut, purchased a store in Hartford, and by 1802 he was selling glassware, dishes, and looking glasses to both the wholesale and retail trade. His fortunes multiplied when he married Sarah Caldwell, daughter of the town's leading merchant, in April 1805. His father-in-law opened doors for him, initiated political contacts for him, and loaned him money to both finance personal ventures and to pay off his debts. In 1806 Christopher had a shop that handled fine and fancy items such as sherry and port wine, East India sugar, chocolate, coffee, and spices, and later included tobacco, nails, cloth, and various seeds. By 1814, he and his family lived on Lord's Hill, a small, expensive district comprised of about one hundred people, among them his father-in-law. With a growing family that now included three boys and two girls, Christopher became interested in local affairs, especially education. In 1814 he joined the school committee and persuaded residents to construct a one-room schoolhouse. His position in the community was enhanced when he became a trustee for the Society for Savings. This institution was the first of its king in Connecticut and among the earliest savings banks in the country.

But the market at this time knew no favorites, and Christopher suffered economic hardship along with his father-in-law brought about by the Embargo of 1807 and the War of 1812. Following his father-in-law's lead, Christopher speculated in land, finance and manufacturing, and by 1820 he was bankrupt. Income from a trust fund established by John Caldwell for his grandchildren kept the family afloat. His anguished intensified when his wife Sarah died in 1821 at the age of twenty-nine. Trustees took over the fund and administered it supplying funds only to the children.

Several years after his wife died, Christopher married Olive Sergeant, daughter of a local jeweler, and began a second family. The family's financial circumstances were precarious, a situation that continued for decades. First the family moved to Ware, Massachusetts in 1830 where he assumed a position as an agent in a textile factory, a job he held for only a short time. Business failures followed. By 1834 he was again back in Hartford, this time planning to open a silk mill. Still funds were short. The Colts' home on Prospect Street was open to boarders, and Mrs. Colt took in four or five lodgers at a time to supplement the family income. His pursuit of silk manufacturing did not work out and by 1841 was selling his real estate as well as some equipment.

Judge Collier had just finished a case in court and stepped into a sore on State street where after chatting a moment he picked up a paper and glanced at it but laid it down hurriedly and asked for a glass of water saying he felt a great pain over his heart. He water was given him and he drank a swallow or two and fell back into the arms of a man standing nearby. Mr. Welch happened to be in the store and Mr. Collier had every attention but after once regaining consciousness for a moment suffered a relapse and fifteen minutes after he was taken ill was dead. His former partner Postmaster Chapman and his most intimate friend Mr. F. S. Brown were notified and the remains taken charge of by Undertaker Morgan. The funeral will take place from the residence of Mr. F. S. Brown, 17 Capital avenue, where Judge Collier had for years made his home.
Judge Collier was born in this city 56 years ago and was the son of William Collier an old resident of Hartford. He was graduated at Trinity college and soon after read law and was admitted to the bar. In 1856 he was judge of the police court. He was instrumental in establishing the police commission and was one of the first police commissioners and organized the system which was adopted. About twenty years ago he retired from practice here and went to the west where he remained two or three years returning to this city in 1869. Soon after his return he and Mr. Charles R. Chapman formed a law partnership which lasted six or seven years. Judge Collier had a very thorough knowledge of the law and his opinion on many questions was often sought. He was considered one of the best draughtsman connected with the law. He was never married and leaves no near relatives besides a brother and sister living in Middletown, Ohio. He had three other brothers who have all been dead some years. George Collier was for a long time employed in the post office here, John C. Collier was a well known steamboat man and Henry Collier was a sea captain and died in Australia.

Obituary - Memorials of Connecticut Judges and Attorneys: GOODWIN COLLIER was the son of William and Harriet Collier, born at Hartford, March 3d, 1829. He died suddenly of heart disease October 27th, 1885.
He was descended from William Collier of Plymouth Colony, who came to New England in 1633, and who was a Commissioner of the United Colonies in 1643. His son Joseph Collier was the first of the name in Connecticut. He lived in Hartford in 1668, and his descendants have been well known and respected there.
Judge Collier's early education was at the Albany Academy. He left that school at the age of thirteen years, fully qualified to enter Trinity College: but the rules of the college did not allow of the admission of one so young, and he continued his studies under the late Nicholas Harris, until his fifteenth year, when he entered the Sophomore class at Trinity, at its second term. After leaving college he studied law for about two years in the office of Dean & Newland at Albany, and then returned to Hartford and entered the law office of the late Charles Chapman, with whom he studied for a year, when he was admitted, at the age of twenty-one, to the Hartford County bar. He was afterwards successively recorder of the city court of Hartford and judge of the police court. He was also at one time a clerk of the county court. He was for several years a partner in the practice of law with Hon. William W. Eaton. He went west in 1866, and returned to Hartford in 1871, when he entered into partnership with Charles R. Chapman, Esq., which relation continued until about two years ago, since which time he has had an office alone. He was never married.
Judge Collier had natural endowments of a high order. His personal appearance, while not imposing, bespoke him a man of ability. He was of medium height, had a dark complexion, straight black hair, large dark eyes, and prominent forehead. There was an unassuming dignity and manly port in all his actions which indicated the possession of a good deal of power in repose and stamped him as one of nature's noblemen. His mind was clear, discriminating and acute, so that he readily saw the real merits in any controversy. His moral perceptions were keen, and led him to be intolerant of injustice in whatever guise it might appear, and quickly to discern the true from the false. He had a calm decision of character that gave authority to his words and won unquestioning respect for his opinions. His memory was wonderfully tenacious, so that he seemed able to call to mind at will any fact or incident that had ever come within his knowledge. His reading and acquirements were extensive, and his general information appeared to be almost encyclopedic. This made him a most suggestive and entertaining conversationalist, and enabled him to give a ready answer to almost any question. So well was this understood among his immediate professional friends, that when any debatable point arose in conversation which could not be readily solved, the common expression was - "Ask Collier," and his opinion generally settled the matter. In social life he was chivalrous and deferential to the other sex, sunny and genial to his friends, and had a kindness of heart which was peculiarly manifested in a fondness for children, who in return prized his friendship with childhood's unerring instincts, and now mourn his death as a personal loss.
He had a love of music that was almost a passion, and he became an expert in the theory and science of music, and a recognized authority and critic in the art of singing and performing upon musical instruments. In his early life he was offered an appointment as a cadet in the navy, but the position was declined, much to his regret. He always kept up his interest however in that branch of the government service, its commanders and vessels, and could discuss the lines of a ship with the familiar knowledge of one bred to the sea.
In his chosen profession he excelled in a knowledge of the principles of the law, and in the power to make a philosophic application of those principles to the solution of whatever legal problem he might have in hand, and to seize the salient points of which a case might hinge. He was pre-eminently a pleader and draftsman, and could accurately draw a difficult declaration or plea without reference to a form book. It was a pleasure to try a case before him as a judge or committee because he had that judicial mind, sound judgment and strict impartiality and integrity so essential to a good judge. His fitness for the bench was eminent and acknowledged.
He was well read in ecclesiastical history, and in friendly discussions of a theological character was wont to take the conservative and orthodox side. He always treated sacred subjects with marked respect. For many years he had a seat in the St. John's Episcopal church, in Hartford, to which denomination he belonged. His father died suddenly, like himself, of heart disease, and he was conscious of the family weakness. He had said he did not expect to live to be an old man. Perhaps on this account he refrained from the exciting contests of a more aggressive life. Had he possessed less modesty and more force he would have gained that leadership among men for which he was so well qualified. His sudden death ended the career of a brilliant man.

177. George COLLIER [699] 396,413 (William5, Hezekiah Jr. (Capt.)4, Hezekiah (Capt.)3, Joseph Jr.2, Joseph1) was born on 14 Jan 1793 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut,38,396 died on 16 Sep 1864 in Durant, Cedar, Iowa,266,414 at age 71, and was buried in Westfield Cemetery, Westfield, Ohio.415

Death Notes: From the Journal of Mary A. C. [Collier] Norton, 25 Sep 1864, written from home on their farm; Center Grove near Durant, Cedar County, Iowa: "Dear Journal; the whole of summer has passed and not one word have I told you of what was passing. Let me see. My dear Father [George Collier] and Mother [Hepzibah] came to see me the 15th of June. I think I can see them now as they came in looking so happy and joyous. Mother was looking in good health, but Father did not look very well. He xxxx and they both, in fact, seemed to enjoy the first few weeks highly, but Father gradually began to decline. Went to the physician and procured medicine, which did not seem to do their office. That was in the beginning of harvest. The Dr. commenced visiting, but for a long time grew worse. So he did not leave his bed. At last Brother James came out to see him. About that time there seemed to be a change for the better, so he could sit in his chair a good part of the day, but he did not continue to improve. His disease seemed to take a new form and shape every day. He would come out and take his meals, so we did not consider him [ ? ] [dangerous?], he was taken from us so suddenly did the stroke come. This was September 16th and on the 19th Mother and Charlie [Charles W. Norton - son-in-law] started with remains [to Medina, Ohio]. I received a letter from him last evening stating they had arrived safely."

General Notes: In 1816 George Collier came to the "Western Reserve of Ohio" shortly after it was opened for settlement. He had been hired by two large land holders to do survey work in an area south of present-day Cleveland, now known as Westfield Center, Medina County. He fell in love with the territory and in 1818 brought his wife Hephzibah Steele and son Lemuel from Hartford, Connecticut, to homestead. He arrived about one year after the first settlers, many of whom were from the Hartford area. George built a house in 1826 about one mile southeast of the village to accommodate his growing family. (His house is the oldest surviving original homestead in Westfield Center. It has been well preserved by its present owners who in 1994 conducted an extensive renovation to being the house back close to its 1826 condition inside and out.) He was one of the stanch citizens of the community and an organizer of the Congregational Church Society in 1834. Mr. Collier helped organize the Ohio Farmers' Insurance Company and in April 1848 became the company's first President.

WESTFIELD HISTORY: James Fowler, an original land owner, came from Westfield, Massachusetts; hence the name Westfield was chosen when the new town was organized in 1820. In 1826 Mr. Fowler decided to found a village at the township center. Four acres were set aside for a public square and then fourteen acres on each side of the square, which were split into lots with sixty-foot frontage, an arrangement which today resembles an old New England town. In 1827 a nearby post office was established and given the name Leroy by the Postmaster General. In 1836 the post office was moved to the village center and thus the name Leroy went with it. In 1971 the Village of Leroy was changed back to Westfield Center by a referendum of the residents.

WESTERN RESERVE: King Charles II of England in 1662 granted the colony of Connecticut a charter for land extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the "Great South Sea" (Pacific Ocean). After the American Revolution in 1786, Connecticut gave up its western lands, but reserved a portion of land in what was to become Northeastern Ohio. Known as the Western Reserve of Connecticut, the area was settled largely by people from Connecticut. Connecticut ceded the Western reserve to the federal government in 1800.

He served in that capacity at New London, during its siege, and, in 1814, at Plattsburgh. He left the army at the close of the war, and settled in this city in the practise (sic) of Medicine. He soon, however, turned his attention towards the compilation of scientific school books, and became one of our most successful authors. He wrote elementary treatises, for the use of schools and academies, on Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Botany, (and on this, several distinct works,) Geology, Physiology, Natural History, Physical Geography and a Treatise on Gold and Silver. His Philosophy was the most successful of these works, the sales having amounted to more than half a million copies. It has been republished in England, and translated into German. His Chemistry has likewise passed through a large number of editions.
Dr. Comstock was noted for great mechanical ingenuity. He made the most of his own apparatus and could work in metals and glass with great skill and neatness. He was likewise a very good draftsman, and drew himself the most of the diagrams employed in illustrating his works. In private life, the Doctor was without an enemy. He was amiable, upright, conscientious, and benevolent. He has left a large circle of friends that deeply mourn his loss…

Burial Notes: Spring Grove Cemetery.

General Notes: Dr. John Lee Comstock, of Hartford, whose likeness ornaments No. 3 of this work, is the fourth son of the late Samuel Comstock, Esq., of Lyme, Connecticut; who was a respectable farmer, and somewhat noted by his neighbors for his information and strength of mind. The subject of this notice had no other instruction than what he received at a common school in his native town, which at that time consisted in reading, writing and Daboll's Arithmetic. When about 20 years of age, he began the study of medicine with his brother, Joseph Comstock, M. D., of Lebanon, afterwards attending a course of medical lectures at Brown University, R. I. Soon after this he received an appointment of Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army, in the war of 1812, and with his appointment an order to report himself for duty, to the Commander of the 25th Regiment of Infantry at Pittsburgh, New York. Now he found himself in a situation to obtain experience in his profession, for it is well known that Plattsburgh was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of that war, and became the deposit of all the sick and wounded of the frontier Regiments. Often have I heard him describe the heart-rending scenes he passed through. Three hospitals, each containing from twenty to thirty patients, being his share of duty. Perhaps no regiment during that war suffered more than the 25th of Infantry to which he was attached. He served during the war and received his six months extra pay as a disbanded officer. Sufficient evidence in the eye of the Government, that his duty had been faithfully performed. Dr. Comstock after the close of the war, settled as a medical practitioner in the city of Hartford, where he still resides (1852), and where he married the grand-daughter of Col. Thomas Seymour, whose wife was sister of the lamented Col. Ledyard, so well-known in history as the murdered commander of Groton Fort in 1761. About 1628, Dr. Comstock received an honorary degree from Middlebury Col. in Vermont, and during the same year he received a patent from the Government for the solution of and application of India Rubber, for the purpose of making cloth and leather water proof, the first patent granted for that purpose in the United States. Daniel Webster in his speech in the great Goodyear case, alludes to this fact. In 1830, he relinquished his practice of medicine, and became an author by profession. His education was only such as a farmer's son can obtain at the common schools of Connecticut, and yet his works have been almost exclusively on the sciences. We see from the following large list of his popular works, that few authors in any country have ventured to write, and fewer booksellers have ventured to print, so great a variety of treatises as have emanated from the pen of this farmer's son. Embracing as they do nearly the whole circle of human sciences. Too great credit cannot be given to the author of all these valuable publications. The world is indebted to him for the efficient aid he has rendered the common schools in this country, and also in England and Prussia, where some of them are used in their high and common schools, particularly his Philosophy, of over half a million of copies have been sold in this country; and yet these works have been written by a man who never bad an hour's instruction or explanation from any of the learned professors of the country. What an example to the young men of this country to follow, and how much better for Dr. Comstock himself, then to have rusted out his life in indolence, and died forgotten in an hour, while now his name will live in the future, while the word science is known. How much better for him to have been born with moderate means, then to nave been the heir of great wealth, which so often buries the brightest talents by dampening an ambition for any employment which requires exertion, and their ambition gratified only by a full moustache, imitating the monkey more than the noblest work of God. The following list was furnished by the Author...
